HONOLULU (AP) - An effort to force Hawaii oil distributors to hand over more information in various places how they set gas prices is not going to become law.

The measure would have sought average crude oil costs and average wholesale gasoline prices to aid determine whether Hawaii's gas prices are inflated.

The Senate wanted to compel Hawaii's two oil refiners, Chevron Corp. and Tesoro Hawaii Corp., to turn over the data.

The House preferred legislation lifting a requirement that oil pricing information be published week-by-week so that government could spend more time gaining expertise on the industry.

The bill died then Rep. Bob Herkes, a Big Island Democrat, wouldn't agree to take up the issue in a House-Senate conference committee.
