Oil was at US$114.75 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, off 18 cents from Wednesday's settle and down from as high as $115.54 overnight, while gold edged up 50 cents to US$948.80 an ounce.   Supervalu 4th quarter profit up 30 percent on lower interest expenses, sales rise

April 17, 2008 - 08:17 a.m. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Supervalu says its profit jumped 30 percent in the fourth quarter from lower interest expenses and a slight boost in sales. The grocer says earnings rose to $156 million, or 73 cents per share, from $120 million, or 57 cents per ploughshare in the year-ago quarter. Supervalu Inc. says it earned 77 cents per share excluding acquisition costs. Thomson Financial says analysts expected 71 cents per share. (AP) - United Technologies Corp., which makes Otis elevators, Sikorsky helicopters and Carrier air conditioners, said Thursday its first-quarter earnings rose 26 percent as the weak dollar boosted profits throughout the business. The Hartford-based industrial conglomerate earned $1 billion, or $1.03 per share, in the quarter, up from $819 million, or 82 cents per share a year earlier. Analysts expected $1.01 per share, according to a Thomson Financial poll.
